Adani Group To Join 5G Spectrum Bid, Says Won't Entre In Consumer Mobility Space

The development comes a day after the Adani Group surprisingly entered into 5G space which will pitch it directly against Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio

The Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Saturday confirmed that his company will participate in the government's upcoming 5G telecom spectrum auction and plans to set up private network solutions across its operations. "As India prepares to roll out next generation 5G services though this auction, we are one  of the many applicants participating in the open bidding process," the company said in an official statement.

It, however, clarified that the company does not intend to enter the consumer mobility space, adding that its intention is not to be in the consumer mobility space.

"We are participating in the 5G spectrum auction to provide private network solutions along  with enhanced cyber security in the airport, ports & logistics, power generation, transmission, distribution, and various manufacturing operations," the company stated.

The development comes a day after the Adani Group surprisingly entered into 5G space which will pitch it directly against Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio and telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal's Airtel.

Additionally, the Adani Group plan is planning to use the airwaves for its data centre as well as the super app it is building to support businesses from electricity distribution to airports, gas retailing to ports.

"As we build our own digital platform encompassing super apps, edge data centres, and industry command and control centres, we will need ultra high quality data streaming capabilities through a high frequency and low latency 5G network across all our businesses," Adani Group said in the statement.

The applications for participating in the July 26 auction of airwaves closed on Friday with proposals from three companies including Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Group, Sunil Mittal-controlled Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea Ltd. Adani Group, which had recently got National Long Distance (NLD) and International Long Distance (ILD) licences became the fourth applicant.

Interestingly, Adani group's participation in the 5G auction on July 26 will be its first direct competition with Ambani.

"As we build our own digital platform encompassing super apps, edge data
centres, and industry command and control centres, we will need ultra high quality data streaming capabilities through a high frequency and low latency 5G network across all our businesses," the company added.

Adani Group's foray into the 5G space comes after the government, last month, approved 5G auctions at reserve prices recommended bythe Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The regulator had recommended an about 39 per cent cut in floor price for the sale of 5G spectrum for mobile services.
