Toyota Hilux Mild Hybrid Revealed, Fortuner To Get It Next Engine — Know Details

Toyota has revealed its Hilux pick-up which is a 48-volt mild hybrid system that increases fuel efficiency and also improves the driving experience.

Toyota has revealed its Hilux pick-up with a mild hybrid set-up and that points to the future of its popular diesel-powered SUVs. Called the Hilux MHEV, this is essentially the 2.8-litre diesel engine equipped with a mild hybrid system. It is a 48-volt mild hybrid system which increases fuel efficiency and also improves the driving experience. Hence, the Hilux mild hybrid gets a small battery and motor which enables it to provide torque assist and increase mileage by up to 10 percent over the standard diesel engine.

Crucially, there is no change in terms of the off-road ability of the Hilux and Toyota states that the Hilux mild hybrid gets a water wading depth of 700 mm. Expect the Hilux to spawn other derivatives with this same system which will enable the diesel engine to live longer within an electrified avatar. This mild hybrid Hilux will be sold across Europe and other markets like Australia while this engine is also sold with the Fortuner in India.

Both the Hilux and the Fortuner are made here and this engine could get a mild hybrid option just like other global markets in the future with a focus on reducing emissions and increasing efficiency. More importantly, after the Hilux, the MHEV tech will make its way to the Fortuner for global markets but we expect this system to make its way here first in the Fortuner and later in the Hilux with the Fortuner especially selling in larger numbers in India. With diesel engines under scrutiny and emissions norms being tightened, the future of the diesel engine and of big SUVs like the Fortuner depends on the introduction of mild hybrids which will give diesels a longer run.

Toyota has not revealed the exact efficiency improvements but more details regarding the Hilux mild hybrid will be revealed in the coming days.
