Mahindra BE 6e Review: Bold Looks, Electrifying Surprises
The BE 6e as it looks like an UFO on the road and is basically a concept car which has been put on sale
A few years back we saw the concept BE which Mahindra said will go into production virtually unchanged. However, it was difficult to believe since most of the time, the concept cars look very much changed when finally coming to the showroom floor. Not so, the BE 6e as it looks like an UFO on the road and is basically a concept car which has been put on sale.
The out of this world styling is the key to the BE 6e and on the road, it stopped traffic with immense road presence. It measures 4.3m but is a riot of cuts and curves. The front-end has those unique lights along with glossy black detailing which contrasts well. Then there are the aero efficient wheels, the flush door handles at the front and the tapered roof line which drops sharply plus the air duct through the bonnet-similar to sports cars! It is all about edgy details and looks unlike anything else while brighter colours makes it stand out more.
The interiors are even more wild, including a pull strap for the door handle which is again something different. The cabin is the bigger highlight though with the design and the way it wraps around you. There are twin screens while the centre console splits the cabin. Quality is the best we have seen from a Mahindra while the fabric upholstery to the materials used or even the design looks expensive.
The steering wheel looks aircraft-like and so are the switches above along with also the aircraft style gear lever which takes some getting used to. The twin screens are high res while the digital driver display has high customization via the gaming console like steering wheel. The feature list is huge with a panoramic sunroof with multi-color ambient lighting which lights up the roof at night!
Other features include a lovely 16-speaker Harman Kardon Audio system with Dolby Atmos, a heads up display which can be customised, a selfie camera where you can do video calls, in built apps, 360 degree camera, dual zone climate control, powered driver seat with memory, built in Wi-Fi with 5g, 7 airbags, ADAS level 2 etc! The seats look like they belong to a fighter jet cockpit plus you can mount any external device at the rear to stream content too!
Space in the front is good but the rear seat feels a bit small due to a high window line plus headroom is a bit limited for tall folks but legroom is decent while the middle headrest is missing. The boot is 455 litre with a powered tailgate and it is decent but also useful is a 45 litre frunk.
It is also fun to drive with the feeling that you are piloting a plane with that steering! It feels quick and small with being compact on the go while power is plenty. There are three drive modes with the sportiest being the one to choose when there is an empty road but you need to be careful as to how quickly it reaches high speeds! With the 79kwh battery pack version putting out 280 horses, it feels very fast and is huge fun with so much performance on a 4.3m car. However, one issue we noticed is that the gear selector was laggy but we expect it to be sorted in the final production cars.
It also feels agile while the ride is a bit on the stiff side but the handling is sorted too. It feels fun, powerful and yet controls its power while being easily the fastest EV in its segment. The range is around 680ish but in the real world you can expect 500-550 km. Overall, the BE 6E impressed us more and for the expected price, it offers a lot. The looks are a draw and so are the tech filled interior but it is also fast. This is an EV which can pull even ICE car buyers.
What we like: Looks, performance, range, features, interior, value
What we do not like: Laggy gear selector, rear seat space
