Hyundai Ioniq 5 Electric SUV With 631 Km Range — First Look Review

The Ioniq 5 is a premium electric SUV and a quick walk around the car reveals that the design is quite striking.

The Ioniq5 is the second electric SUV from Hyundai and the first to be based on the E-GMP platform which globally underpins all of the current electrified products within the Hyundai group. The Ioniq 5 is a premium electric SUV and a quick walk around the car reveals that the design is quite striking. The shape is crossover-like and unique with some sharp detailing around it. The wheels, aerodynamic design and edgy rear are attention-grabbing too.

It does look like an EV and not a petrol/diesel car being converted to one because it is. There is no petrol or diesel Ioniq 5 and it exists as an EV only. There are new Parametric Pixel LED Headlamps, massive 20-inch alloys, flush door handles and even Parametric LED tail-lamps. It has a length of 4635mm while having a long wheelbase of 3000mm.

Being an EV, there is a flat floor which means there is a feeling of space along with sustainable materials being used in the cabin. There is Eco-processed leather seat upholstery, soft-touch materials, eco-friendly carpet fabric while the centre console and the glovebox are sliding too, which is unique. A pair of 12.3-inch screens are there for the instrument cluster and the centre console touchscreen. The feature list includes a Bose premium audio system, Front row heated and ventilated seats and rear heated seats, dual-zone climate control, connected car tech and more. There is also a front boot space of 57l. In terms of safety, the Ioniq 5 has six airbags and ADAS Level 2 features including front/rear radars.

Let's talk performance and here, the Ioniq5 has a 72.6 kWh battery pack and a 217PS electric motor. The total range here is important as it is 631km and beats many other more expensive EVs. That said you get a single motor and not an all-wheel drive. You can use the Ioniq 5 to charge electronic appliances and gadgets like bicycles, e-scooters or laptops, and phones.

Being locally assembled, the Ioniq 5 would be more aggressively priced than if it was a CBU import and volumes would be higher too. We expect pricing to start from Rs 40 lakh onwards and that would make it more valuable than some of the other EVs due to the range on offer plus the features too.
