Earth Day Special: BYD Seal And BMW i5 Are The Fastest Electric Sedans

The premium EV segment, then, is growing fast, and that is fuelled by desirable offerings like the duo you see here. Both are a pair of fast electric sedans that can shame a sports car.

While still in its infancy, the EV market in India has been constantly shaping up with newer launches and more options. It is true at the premium end of the segment, where buyers are more open towards accepting newer technologies.

The premium EV segment, then, is growing fast, and that is fuelled by desirable offerings like the duo you see here. Both are a pair of fast electric sedans that can shame a sports car.

The BMW i5 is more of a silent M5 with twin motors developing over 600bhp and 820Nm. The performance as a result is shocking to say the least, with 0-100 km/h dispatched in 3.8 seconds while showing what electric cars can do in terms of adding a new dimension in terms of raw performance.

The i5, though, is not just about straight line histrionics as the handling, along with the precision, enables it to replicate a conventional performance car too. The power delivery is relentless but sharp, and it has the reflexes to match its M5 cousin.

The same can also be said for the BYD Seal Performance. At under Rs 60 lakh, the Seal twin motor version simply demolishes every car at this price for its sheer bang for buck performance, as no other car priced at this level is as quick in doing 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

However, are EVs just point-and-shoot devices, or is there more to them? Electric cars serve up all of the torque in one go, and unlike ICE cars, there is no drama. That means instant performance, which a conventional petrol or diesel car cannot match.

For Earth Day, it is perhaps right that we bring these two cars together, which are the fastest electric sedans around, while not being strictly rivals. While electric cars might be heavier, they are changing what fast cars are all about or even what automobiles can do with batteries, enabling greater performance while also increasing efficiency.

Compared to sports cars sipping expensive fuel, these two, when charged at home, are as cheaper to run as small cars, and that's the advantage for EVs. However, many argue that fast EVs also lack character as they are simply about performance, and they are also much heavier while not having the characteristic sound, which is music to enthusiasts' years.

That said, no doubt the i5 and Seal push the envelope about EVs and show a different side to them. The i5 is nearly as quick as an M5, and BMW shows how you can make an electric car fun as well, while the Seal Performance brings in absurd acceleration at a bargain price. Electric cars have arrived, it seems, and the game will only get more interesting from now.
