Sawan 2024 Dates:

This year, the month of Sawan will start on Monday, July 22, and end on Monday, August 19. Remarkably, both the beginning and end of Sawan fall on a Monday, doubling its significance. This year, there will be five Sawan Mondays and four Mangala Gauri Vrats.

The five Sawan Somwars fall on July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12 and August 19.

Significance Of Sawan:

According to scriptures, when Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra during Chaturmas, Mahadev takes charge of the universe. The Shiva Purana states that Sawan is the first month of Chaturmas, governed by Lord Shankar. During this time, Bholenath resides on Earth and alleviates his devotees' sufferings.

Rishi Markandeya attained the boon of long life by performing severe penance during Sawan, receiving Shiva Ji’s blessings for longevity. Thus, worshipping Shiva in Sawan removes all troubles, bringing happiness, prosperity, success, long life, wealth, and a happy married life.

Shiva And Gauri Worship In Sawan:

There is a tradition of starting the 16-Monday fast during Sawan. Additionally, every Tuesday of this month holds special significance. Sawan Tuesdays are dedicated to Mother Gauri and are known as Mangala Gauri Vrat. On this day, married women fast for their husband’s well-being, and unmarried girls fast to find a good husband.

Sawan Somwar Puja Vidhi:

According to the Shiva Purana, evening worship of Shiv Ji is considered the best. Although daily worship during Sawan is ideal, Monday holds special importance.

  • On the first day, bathe during Brahma Muhurat and wear white clothes, as white is Shiva’s favourite colour.
  • Clean the home temple, place a Shivling in a copper vessel, and offer a Bel leaf. Pour water from a copper or silver pot.
  • Perform Abhishek with Panchamrit while continuously chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
  • Offer rice, flowers, Dhatura, white sandalwood, Gulal, Abir, perfume, and Shami leaves on the Shivling. Also, worship Parvati Ji.
  • Offer Kheer, Halwa, and Bael fruit as Prasad. Light a ghee lamp, recite Shiva Chalisa, perform Shiva’s Aarti, and distribute the Prasad.

Sawan Puja Niyam:

  • Avoid shaving, moustache trimming, and haircutting during Sawan.
  • Refrain from consuming meat and alcohol, and observe celibacy.
  • Do not eat brinjal, milk, curd, and leafy green vegetables during Sawan.
  • Wake up during Brahma Muhurat, control your anger, and avoid negative thoughts.
  • On the day of the Sawan Monday fast, maintain cleanliness.

Sawan Somwar Puja Samagri:

During Sawan Monday, if you are performing Abhishek of the Shivling, mix Ganga water with regular water and pour a thin stream over Mahadev. While doing this, chant Mahadev’s mantras 108 times. Then, offer a handful of rice and Bel leaves (Belpatra). It is said that worshipping Shiva with these three items reduces the adverse effects of Shani’s Sade Sati and Dhaiya. Financial troubles are alleviated, and both economic and mental distress are eliminated.
