Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Devotees around the world are preparing to celebrate the commencement of Ganesh Chaturthi, a ten-day festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha that begins on September 19 and ends on September 28 this year. This joyous occasion, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi, Ganeshotsav, Vinayaka Chavithi, and Ganesh Utsav, falls on the Chaturthi tithi of Shukla Paksha, a waxing moon period.

The celebrations begin with the solemn Avahana or Pran Pratishtha, which includes the lighting of the Deep Prajwala (sacred lamp), taking the Sankalpa (vow), and bringing Lord Ganesha's idol home. Ganesh Visarjan, the grand culmination, entails the immersion of the idol into water.

Ganesh Sthapana Date, Time & Shubh Muhurat:

According to the Drik Panchang, the shubh muhurat spanning 11:01 AM to 1:43 PM for those looking for an auspicious time to perform Ganesh Sthapana. The festival will start at 02:09 PM on September 18 and will end at 03:13 PM on September 19. The Chaturthi Tithi falls on September 18 between 12:39 PM and 1:43 PM.

Ganesh Sthapana Rules:

While celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees should adhere to a few guidelines. 

  1. Prior to Ganesh Sthapana on Ganesh Chaturthi day, devotees must thoroughly clean the puja area and their homes.

  2. Decorating the puja space with flowers, rangoli, and traditional ornaments is encouraged.

  3. Lord Ganesha's idol can be welcomed into homes for 1, 3, 7, or 10 days, placing it on a clean, adorned platform.

  4. A dedicated throne or platform should be prepared for the idol, ensuring it faces the North.

  5. It is essential to abstain from consuming onions and garlic, whether as prasad or household food, following Ganpati sthapna.

  6. The ten-day festival period calls for abstinence from meat and alcohol.

  7. During the Sthapana of Lord Ganesha's idol, auspicious directions are east, west, or northeast.

  8. Devotees should perform puja, recite Ganesh mantras, and read Ganesh Chalisa before the Sthapana to invite Ganpati Bappa into their homes.

  9. Care should be taken while positioning the idol of Lord Ganesha; his trunk should not point to the right, symbolizing stubbornness or difficulties. Instead, it should be oriented to the left, signifying success and positivity.
