Kamal Haasan Writes To KFCC Prez Amid Kannada Row: ‘Statement Taken Out Of Context’

Kamal Haasan clarified his intention was to celebrate shared cultural roots and honour Dr. Rajkumar's family, not to undermine Kannada's rich, independent literary tradition

Actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has issued a heartfelt clarification following the backlash over his recent remarks on the origins of the Kannada language, which sparked controversy ahead of the release of his upcoming film 'Thug Life'. In a detailed letter addressed to Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) President Narasimhalu, Haasan expressed deep regret that his words were misinterpreted and emphasised his longstanding respect for the Kannada language and its people.

Responding to criticism that stemmed from his comment at the Thug Life audio launch — where he reportedly said, “Kannada was born out of Tamil” — Haasan explained that his intention was never to undermine Kannada. “It pains me that my statement at the Thug Life audio launch spoken out of genuine affection for the legendary Dr Rajkumar's family, especially Shiva Rajkumar has been misunderstood and taken out of context,” he wrote, noting that his words were meant as a tribute to the late Dr Rajkumar’s family, particularly actor Shiva Rajkumar, and a celebration of shared cultural roots.

“There is no dispute or debate on the rich legacy of the Kannada language,” Haasan affirmed, adding that Kannada, like Tamil, has a proud and independent literary tradition that he deeply admires. He further expressed sorrow over the discomfort caused to Shiva Rajkumar, who was present at the event, stating: “I really regret that Shivanna had to go through such embarrassment.”

Kamal Haasan said: "I know and speak the language of Cinema. Cinema is a universal language that knows only love and bonding. My statement was also only to establish that bond and unity amongst all of us. Cinema must remain a bridge between people never a wall that divides them. This was the intent of my statement and I never have been nor would ever want to give any room for public unrest and animosity."
