Trump confident of Mexican President-elect helping resolve border issues
Washington D. C. [USA], July 03 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump, after his "great talk" with Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said he was confident that the latter would help in resolving the border issues between the two neighbours.
Speaking to White House reporters, Trump said that border security, NAFTA and a separate US-Mexico trade deal were among the points of discussion between the two leaders.
"I think he's going to try to help us with the border," Sputnik quoted Trump, as saying.
"We have unbelievably bad border laws, immigration law, and Mexico has very strong immigration laws, so they can help us until we straighten out our immigration laws," he added.
The leftist Obrador was elected as the next President of Mexico on Sunday after a landslide victory in the elections.
The former mayor of Mexico City is estimated to have won with 53 per cent of the votes.
The victory makes him the first leftist president since Mexico began its transition to democracy more than 30 years ago.
Both his main opponents, Ricardo Anaya and Jose Antonio Meade, conceded to Lopez Obrador.
Trump had earlier taken to his Twitter handle to congratulate the Mexican President-elect.
"Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico. I look very much forward to working with him. There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!" Trump tweeted.(ANI)
