Rakhine crisis obstacle to democratic transition: Mark Green

Naypyidaw [Myanmar], May 21 (ANI): The chief of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mark Green said that Rakhine State crisis is an obstacle to Myanmar's democratic transition while saying that it must be resolved soon.

Green, whose five-day visit to Myanmar comes to an end today, said the US agency would back Naypyidaw in areas like health, food security, humanitarian assistance, and democratic governance, The Myanmar Times reported.

He also urged State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to take steps to respect the rights of all people in Myanmar, while taking measures for safe repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh.

The US government hasn't revealed its policy on Myanmar since President Donald Trump has come to power. Therefore, this visit of Green was seen as an important diplomatic visit to Myanmar.

In November last year, Myanmar and Bangladesh signed an agreement to repatriate an estimated 700,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled a brutal Myanmar military campaign launched in August 2017. (ANI)
