10 killed after gunmen attack Afghan educational office

Kabul [Afghanistan], Jul 11 (ANI): At least ten people were killed and as many sustained injuries after unidentified gunmen attacked an educational office in eastern Nangarhar province in Jalalabad on Wednesday, officials said.

The attack in Nangarhar's educational department began at around 9:30 am (local time) in PD5 of Jalalabad city when armed gunmen stormed into the premises and began firing, provincial governor's spokesman Attaullah Khoghyani was quoted by TOLOnews, as saying.

He added there was no clarity about the number of gunmen involved.

Eyewitnesses said that around 50 people are trapped inside the building. However, officials are yet to confirm the same.

The clashes between the gunmen and security forces are still going on.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Nangarhar education directorate Asif Shinwari confirmed that a watchman was also killed in the shooting.

This is the third major suicide attack in Jalalabad in the last ten days.

The latest attack came barely a day after 10 people were killed and four others wounded in a suicide attack in Jalalabad. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

For those unversed, 19 people died in a suicide bombing on July 1. Most of the killed were from the Sikh community.

The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the July 1 attack. (ANI)
