In New Orleans, USA, a "terrorist attack" occurred amidst New Year's celebrations. According to officials, an attacker intent on causing mass casualties drove a vehicle into a crowd, leaving behind devastation. As per Reuters, 15 people have been reported dead, and 35 others are injured. The city's mayor, LaToya Cantrell, termed the early-morning attack on the iconic Bourbon Street as a "terrorist act." Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the assailant was determined to carry out a massacre. The attacker, whose identity remains unknown, drove a white pickup truck into the crowd, exited the vehicle, and opened fire at the police before being shot dead by law enforcement. Two police officers sustained injuries in the incident. Reports indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) was found nearby. The FBI has taken charge of the investigation to ensure there are no additional threats. Police also reportedly destroyed a few suspicious packages. The attack occurred just hours before the annual Sugar Bowl, a college football event that draws large crowds and a significant TV audience, amplifying the sense of fear. Bourbon Street is one of the most popular locations in the U.S. for New Year celebrations and is famous for the annual Mardi Gras parade. This terrorist attack comes in the final days of President Joe Biden's administration, just three weeks before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. The White House stated that senior FBI and Homeland Security officials briefed Biden about the incident. Biden, who is currently in Wilmington and heading to Camp David for the weekend, called Mayor Cantrell to assure her of full federal support. As of 10 a.m. local time, Trump had not issued any response. Elsewhere in the U.S., New Year celebrations concluded without any untoward incidents.
