Thoothukudi Corporation workers turn waste into compost to sustain an entire ecosystem | ABP News
Hundreds of tonnes of garbage is brought in daily from around Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu to this composting yard belonging to the city corporation. The vermicompost produced at the Thoothukudi Corporation Fertilizer Depot is used to maintain nearly 100,000 saplings planted by the corporation sanitation workers. The waste that is brought in is first segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable components. The compostable garbage then undergoes the process to turn into manure.
Over the past five years, this manure has been widely used to maintain the trees planted in Thoothukudi's Miyawaki forest - a Japanese method for creating dense forests using native species.
