Wayanad Landslide: Monsoon Becomes a Doom, Celestial Calamity Disrupts Lifestyle | ABP News
The monsoon is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and is essential for agriculture in India, where approximately 50 to 60 percent of farming relies on seasonal rains. Insufficient rainfall directly translates to lower crop yields, which in turn drives up inflation. In recent years, however, there has been growing concern over whether the monsoon is becoming more of a relief or a disaster. According to estimates by the World Meteorological Organization, in 2021 alone, floods and storms caused damage amounting to approximately ₹60,000 crore in India. Last year, Himachal Pradesh faced losses totaling ₹12,000 crore due to similar events. Furthermore, the full extent of the recent disaster in Wayanad, Kerala, has yet to be fully assessed, with accurate figures still pending.
