Thiruvananthapuram: Vizhinjam International Seaport ready to anchor first container ship, ‘San Fernando’

The Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to receive its first container ship, the San Fernando, on July 11, 2024 in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. This marks a significant milestone as the San Fernando will be the first mothership to anchor at this port. Vizhinjam International Seaport, near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a deepwater port project aimed at becoming a major transshipment hub. With a draft of about 20 meters, it offers strategic advantages on international shipping routes, facilitating trade with the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia. The port promises to boost regional economic growth by creating jobs, attracting investments, and easing congestion at nearby ports like Kochi and Chennai. Despite challenges in land acquisition and financing, efforts by the Kerala government and private partners aim to make Vizhinjam a cornerstone of India's maritime infrastructure, fostering industrial development and logistical efficiency.
