J&K News: Encounter Underway in Jammu & Kashmir’s Udhampur, Search Operation Intensifies in Basantgarh Forests
A major encounter is underway in the Basantgarh region of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir. According to early reports, the gunfight began around 9:30 AM when security forces, including the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, launched a joint search operation in the dense forests of Bihali, Basantgarh, after receiving intelligence about the presence of terrorists. Sources confirm that initial exchange of fire took place between the hiding terrorists and the security personnel. Though gunfire has temporarily subsided as of early evening, the area has been fully cordoned off and a "search and destroy" operation continues. This forested terrain of Basantgarh has remained a security challenge for the past two years. A terrorist group, believed to consist of two to three heavily armed operatives, has been using the region’s dense vegetation for cover, making tracking difficult. Security forces have increased patrolling and surveillance across the region. The operation remains sensitive as the forces continue to flush out any remaining threats. Further details are awaited as the situation unfolds.
