'Adjust Kar Lo Yaar': Video Of Woman Usurping Train Seat Is Viral. How To Deal With The Dreaded 'Request'?
A video of a woman seemingly grabbing the seat of another passenger and asking the latter to "adjust" has gone viral.
'Thoda adjust karlo'! These are the words with which most fights on the Indian Railways trains begin. We all take trains to travel from our city of work to our hometowns or have taken the 'lauhpathgamini', as it is called in Hindi, at some point in our lives. Along with the chugging and clitter-clatter of the train, the hot cuppa and gossips with co-passengers can make the rides memorable.
However, a number of videos, wherein ticketless travellers or passengers with unconfirmed seats filling the train coaches or fighting those with valid tickets, have come to the fore. Such experiences can ruin the travel for everyone. One such undated video, showing a woman seemingly hogging the side-upper berth of a train with her child has gone viral. The video has not been independently verified by ABP Live, though.
In the video, the woman, who is presumably travelling without a confirmed ticket, can be seen arguing with the passenger assigned to the seat and repeatedly telling her to "adjust".
During the argument, the passenger (also a woman) with a valid ticket for the seat, asks the other woman to speak with the train ticket examiner (TTE) if she wanted a seat. "I have a confirmed ticket, not an RAC (reservation against cancellation) one... You are busy on your phone for a long time. You are not getting down and just misbehaving."

To this, the woman who had allegedly illegally taken the seat, says: "Why should I call the TTE? You should call him if you want to sit. I shall talk to him. I am not misbehaving. I am only asking you to adjust." The video has now gone viral.
How To Avoid A Situation Over Unconfirmed Seats On Indian Railways?
Ensure that you have a valid ticket with the proper seat and coach numbers. The Railways rule book says: "Advance reservations are made generally up to 90 days in advance for all classes and all trains. The period of advance reservation (ARP) is exclusive of the day of departure of the train."
Reach the station early and double-check the numbers when getting on the train.
If you have a waiting-list ticket purchased online, ensure that the status is 'confirmed' with the proper berth before you get on the train. If it is not confirmed, you cannot get on the train.
If you have an RAC ticket, you can get on the train but the seat will have to be shared with another passenger. An RAC ticket DOES NOT guarantee a confirmed ticket. However, you may talk to the TTE to allot a seat against a cancelled ticket or if a passenger fails to show up.
Rule For Sleeping On Train Seats
The Railways rulebook says berths are provided to valid passengers for sleeping between 9 PM and 6 AM. "When berths are reserved for passengers, the intention is to provide sleeping accommodation between 9 PM to 6 AM. During 6 AM to 9 PM, the passengers concerned, if required make room for other passengers in the compartment up to its carrying capacity."
