The official trailer 2 of The Matrix Resurrections has a lot of easter eggs and hidden details. We break them down for you, and also describe the theories inferred from the trailer.
New Delhi: Warner Bros. released the second trailer of the Keanu Reeves starrer The Matrix Resurrections on Monday, December 6. The official trailer 2 has a lot of easter eggs and hidden details, and confirms some of the theories deciphered from the first trailer.
We break them down for you, and also describe the theories inferred from the trailer.
Loops & Cycles In The Matrix
The trailer begins with the shot of a city, followed by police reaching a woman with braided hair, just as some officials had tried to capture Trinity in the first scene of The Matrix (1999). The Déjà vu trailer of The Matrix Resurrections revealed that Ellen Hollman plays an alternate version of Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections. A common concept in The Matrix franchise has been that of loops and cycles. In The Matrix Reloaded, The Architect tells Neo that the latter is The One in the sixth iteration of the simulation, and that there had been others like him before. The recreation of the first scene from the first matrix movie could be an indication towards a loop in the Matrix.
Coffee Shop Named Simulatte
The trailer cuts to a scene where Neo meets Carrie-Anne Moss’s Trinity. Behind him, one can spot the word Simulatte, written in green. Simulatte is the name of the coffee shop and is made up of two words, ‘Simulate’ and ‘Latte’, where Simulate indicates the fact that the Matrix is a simulation, and Latte indicates waking up and embracing the truth.
Return Of Agent Smith
The second trailer strongly suggests that Jonathan Groff is Agent Smith. Reiterating the words of Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith from The Matrix, Groff says, “Billions of people just living out their lives... oblivious.”
The scene switch between Weaving’s Smith and Groff, suggesting that Neo is now able to recall Smith. Smith’s mouth melts and closes, similar to what Neo experienced in the ‘The Matrix’ This could either be Neo doing this to Smith to seek revenge, or could be Smith making fun of Neo to remind him of the events from the first film in the trilogy.
Morpheus Offers The Red Pill
Yahya Abdul Mateen’s character, which seems to be a younger version of Morpheus, appears in yellow and offers someone 'The Red Pill', which symbolises ‘choosing to know a life-changing truth’, a reference from The Matrix. Morpheus is seen donning bright colours at different points in the trailer.
Matrix Within A Matrix
Then, there is a scene in which Neo and Morpheus are in a theatre, and scenes from The Matrix are being projected on a screen. This could be a metaphorical explanation for the fact that every movie of the Matrix franchise is a simulation within a simulation, or a Matrix within a Matrix. The movie may make Neo realise that he had been in a simulation.
Then, we see Jessica Henwick, who plays a character named Bugs. Bugs is a blue-haired gunslinger with a White Rabbit tattoo. Henwick has described her character as "the audience's eyes.”
Mirrors As Portals
Bugs and Morpheus are trying to wake Neo up to make him realise that he is trapped in a simulation, just as he lived in a false simulation of reality in the first part of The Matrix.
Mirrors will play an important role in The Matrix Resurrections, as they serve as portals.
In one scene, Morpheus sees himself in a mirror, where the trickling water resembles the Matrix’s green code. The mirrors are also a symbolism to Alice in Wonderland.
In one of the most important scenes of the trailer, Neo enters The Construct, a virtual work space created to run simulations, and says he remembers the place.
Machines In The Real World
Then we see power plants, where thousands of humans are connected to the Matrix. Two ships shaped like an insect are seen in the real world, and could mean that humans are using machines.
Also, the Mnemosyne replaces the Nebuchadnezzar. Mnemosyne is the Greek goddess of memory, which will be one of the recurring themes of the movie.
In the trailer, déjà vu has two meanings: one, a glitch in the Matrix, and two, the feeling of re-experienced something.
The trailer has a number of scenes of Neo moving in and out of the Matrix. Neo is treated by the machines, and Morpheus says the machines made him believe that the world of simulation was all he deserved. In one scene, Neo tries to jump off a building, probably to escape the simulation and enter reality. The movie will likely focus on the importance of mental health.
Morpheus tells Neo that a part of him knows what is real, which, for Neo, is Trinity.
Niobe Leading A War Against Machines?
Niobe is one of the most important revelations in the trailer, who is seen in Zion, the real world. She tells Neo that it is easy to forget the amount of noise the Matrix pumps into one’s head, and that there is something else which makes the same kind of noise—War. Her words suggest that she may have continued the war against the machines, and has probably the leader of the human race in the real world.
It is officially confirmed that The Matrix Resurrections is set 20 years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions. However, Niobe appears to have grown a lot older, compared to Neo and Trinity. The reason why Neo and Trinity do not appear much old could be because the machines preserved their bodies.
One can also see Sati in the trailer, played by Priyanka Chopra, who says the most important choice in Neo’s life is not his to make.
Neo Will Save Trinity
Neo must remember everything and bring his memories back to save Trinity, who tells him that a part of her believes she has been waiting for Neo her whole life. In a rooftop scene Trinity tells Neo her dream ended here on the roof, which means she had successfully come out of the simulation, and could remember her past.
The trailer ends with Neo fighting Smith, and saying, “I still know Kung fu”, which is another reference to the first film.
The Matrix Resurrections is slated to release in theatres on December 22, 2021.
