The submersible that disappeared in the North Atlantic while taking five wealthy tourists to see the wreck of the Titanic has sparked a storm of media coverage and social media reactions. From Twitter to Reddit, social media platforms are filled with a range of conflicting emotional responses.
In US, the news of the missing submersible is at the top of online news sites and discussed on morning shows. While in the UK, the story was prominently featured on front pages Wednesday, and even King Charles III was being kept up to date on the situation since one of those onboard was a longtime supporter of two charities he founded, reported the Associated Press.
And with the wreck of the Titanic just having hours left of its presumed air supply on Thursday, people have become even more concerned about the tourists who were inside the submersible.
As the news of the submersible plays prominently in media across the world, another incident of a similar kind - a boat carrying hundreds of migrants sank recently off the coast of Greece in which 81 people were killed - failed to garner much response.
Social media had its own take on why the boat capsize incident in which poor migrants drowned did not get the kind of coverage and response it should have gotten.
"All I can think is refugees capsize no one cares - some billionaires on joy rides go missing - it seems like multiple navy’s are instantly searching - ," commented American actor and producer John Cusack

"The sad hypocrisy of our world. A submarine expedition garners worldwide attention for a few missing billionaires who could not abstain themselves from “exploring” the remains of the titanic while a drowned boat filled with brown and black migrants receives barely any attention," wrote one Twitter user.

"More than 500 migrants and asylum seekers are presumed dead after their boat sank. While a multimillion-dollar rescue effort is underway for billionaires aboard a Titanic submarine, the response to the missing migrants primarily revolves around tightening borders. #OceanGate," commented another Twitter user.

"What would happen if migrants on boats with limited resources were also seen as brave explorers gifted with curiosity and wonder for depths unknown, I wonder," wrote a fourth.

"A billionaire who is missing at sea viewing the Titanic is front page news. 300 migrants die in a boat off the coast of Greece and the British media talks about them like they aren’t human," wrote another user.
