ICYMI: How Mirabai Chanu's Mother, Relatives Celebrated Weightlifter's CWG Victory

New Delhi: After winning India's first gold medal at the ongoing Birmingham Commonwealth Games, there is an atmosphere of celebration in Manipur, the home state of weightlifter Mirabai Chanu. Residents of Chanu's native village Nongpok Kakching in the Imphal East district were glued to television sets on Saturday night and jumped in joy after Chanu won India’s first gold medal after competing in the Women’s 49kg category.

Olympic medalist Chanu gave India its first gold medal of these Games with a record-breaking performance. She made a new record for total weight with her strong performance in these games with clean and jerk. Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg (88 kg and 113 kg) in the women's 49 kg event.

After her win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on Twitter. He wrote, "The exceptional @mirabai_chanu makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes."
The weightlifter also summed up her gold medal and wrote "Lifting 201kg never felt easy but thanks to the love and wishes of billions back home, every challenge is just an attempt away."
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that he is very proud of the 'superstar daughter' of Manipur. He said, “There’s no better feeling than seeing our tricolour fly high on the world stage. The entire nation is proud of you Mirabai.”
