The rare 'doomsday fish' oarfish was spotted off Tamil Nadu’s coast after sightings in Mexico, Australia & NZ. This sparked fears of a natural disaster. What does it really signify?

The doomsday fish, is a mysterious deep-sea creature that's often linked to natural disasters in folklore. Why The ‘Doomsday’ Nickname?

In Japanese folklore, the oarfish is believed to be a harbinger of doom, earning it the nickname 'doomsday fish.' Known locally as ryugu no tsukai, or 'messenger from the sea god’s palace,' the creature is thought to appear before major seismic events like earthquakes and tsunamis. While these beliefs are rooted in centuries-old traditions, they continue to fuel speculation whenever an oarfish comes into view.

Japan has seen oarfish sightings shortly before significant earthquakes in the past. The eerie timing of these global sightings only adds to the mystique.

What Happened After the Sightings?

  • Mexico: Shortly after the February 2025 sighting, the region experienced an uptick in seismic tremors.
  • New Zealand: The country recorded several minor earthquakes days after the oarfish appeared. It led some to draw connections between the two events.
  • Australia: Following the sighting, there were reports of unusual underwater activity, but no major disasters have occurred.
  • India: As of now, there have been no immediate natural disturbances reported following the fish's appearance, but the sighting has left many locals uneasy.

Myth Meets Science

According to marine biologists, there's no scientific evidence to link oarfish sightings to earthquakes or other natural disasters. hese ribbon-like giants typically dwell between 200 to 1,000 meters deep and rarely come to the surface unless they are ill, dying, or possibly breeding.

Still, scientists don’t completely dismiss the idea. Some believe the fish could be sensitive to changes in the deep ocean.

A Viral Mystery

A video is going viral on social media which shows a group of local fishermen hauling the massive creature. This oarfish estimated to be around 30 feet in length, making at least seven men carry it. This unusual sighting marks the latest in a series of global appearances by the rarely-seen fish.

The Tamil Nadu sighting has sparked a wave of online curiosity, with many questioning what might come next.
