Unable To Pay Hospital Bill, Man Dies By Suicide In Telangana
Authorities of undivided Andhra Pradesh had acquired 900 acres from 750 farmers in 2006 and as compensation, the government had promised a job to one member of every affected family.
New Delhi: Unable to pay the hospital bill, a man died by suicide after hanging himself in a private hospital in Telangana.
According to a report by news agency IANS, the deceased, identified as Marri Bapu, 46, was undergoing treatment in the hospital as he consumed pesticide after his son was denied a job, as promised by the authorities, while acquiring his land for Kakatiya Thermal Power Project (KTPP) in Mahabubpalli village.
The hospital had said that they would discharge the patient only after they made the payment of Rs 60,000. After his family failed to arrange the amount, Bapu killed himself in the hospital ward on Thursday.
Bapu, who was working as a labourer, had been running from pillar to post to get his son a job. He had gone to KTPP and urged the officials to provide the promised job to his son. However, on getting no positive response, he consumed pesticide on April 1 after which he was rushed to a private hospital in Bhupalapally.
Bapu is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His son said that the authorities acquired two acres of their land in 2006 and had promised to give him a job in return.
Meanwhile, leaders of various political parties demanded action against the hospital for pressurising Bapu’s family for the bill payment. They also staged protest against KTPP, demanding Rs 25 lakh compensation for the bereaved family.
Notably, authorities of undivided Andhra Pradesh had acquired 900 acres from 750 farmers in 2006 and as compensation, the government had promised a job to one member of every affected family.
According to locals, jobs were provided to only 550 people since the children of the remaining farmers were either minor or were not eligible back then.
