iPhone 17 Leaks: Periscope 5x Zoom Camera Tipped To Remain Exclusive To Pro Models

iPhone 17 Leaks: iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will exclusively feature a 5x periscope telephoto lens.

iPhone 17 Leaks: Apple is preparing to launch its iPhone 17 series next year, and early leaks suggest the tech giant will maintain a clear distinction between its Pro models and standard variants. These differences are expected to revolve around key hardware upgrades, particularly in the camera and performance segments.

According to South Korean publication The Elec, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will exclusively feature a 5x periscope telephoto lens, a feature Apple has been strategically rolling out.

When Was Periscope Camera Launched?

Initially introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, this lens offers up to 5x optical zoom, providing a significant enhancement for photography enthusiasts. This year, the iPhone 16 Pro also adopted this feature, but the upcoming standard models — the iPhone 17 and a variant rumoured to be named the iPhone 17 Air — are unlikely to include this advanced camera technology.

To support this innovation, Apple supplier LG Innotek is reportedly investing KRW 375.9 billion (approximately $281 million) to expand its manufacturing facilities. Industry insiders believe this investment is aimed at ramping up production capacity for camera components, particularly for the Pro models of the iPhone 17 series.

Performance upgrades are also on the horizon. The Pro models are expected to run on Apple’s cutting-edge A19 Pro chip, paired with 12GB of RAM for seamless multitasking and improved speed. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air may feature either the A18 or A19 chip, coupled with 8GB of RAM. In terms of cameras, all models are rumoured to sport 24-megapixel front-facing cameras, while the iPhone 17 Air may house a single 48-megapixel rear sensor.

Looking ahead, Apple appears to be exploring under-display Face ID technology, which could debut in its 2025 lineup. This ambitious development reinforces Apple’s commitment to pushing boundaries in smartphone innovation.
