AI As Catalyst: How Students Are Leveraging AI Today, To Build A Better Tomorrow

Overall, AI is rapidly evolving and it can be used to grow, especially in a student’s learning journey.

How can we complete tasks quickly and with minimal effort? In today’s fast-paced world efficiency is everything and we constantly hunt to accomplish more while expending energy, and the answer to that question is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is a form of technology that allows computers to perform advanced tasks like analysing data, understanding language, and making recommendations. The analysis of the data is the most important part for the AI to work accomplished by 3 main forms of  Machine Learning Supervised, Unsupervised and Reinforcement learning making it all possible.  It is rapidly changing, developing and evolving and can be used in our own work.

As students, who are buried with deadlines, academic stress and extracurriculars we can use this advanced technology to make our lives easier. Furthermore, it provides us with tools to make our learning content far more comprehensible, finish tasks with a deeper understanding and provide us with ideas on how to go about writing a specific topic.

Personalised Learning and Efficiency

Each person has a different manner in which they learn and comprehend information; for some, it might be through videos or for some it might be through quizzes so there are an immense number of ways a person may gain information however, that cannot be effectively achieved due to the learnings in school being done in a group setting. And there is where AI takes a role, it took a wild entry on November 30, 2022, in the form of ChatGPT, released by Open AI.

The word Chat GPT is what immediately comes to the mind when we hear “AI Tools”, The tool used by everyone at least once and a life saver to all of us students. It gives us the ability to finish a task in minutes but that is not the way in which AI should be used, it isn’t gonna be there with you in the exam hall instead it is important to find creative ways in which we can accelerate our learning.

Using AI Tools for Learning

We can effectively use these tools for learning through the following techniques: - Use platforms such as Khan Academy’s AI tutor or Chat GPT to form custom study plans.

  • Ask AI chatbots such as Copilot and Gemini to quiz you on a topic you recently learnt by providing a prompt specifying the curriculum, subject and topic.
  • Instead of directly fishing for answers try and attempt the questions yourself and if the answer isn’t coming to you then just ask these chatbots to explain the process and provide step-by-step methodologies.
  • Ask these chatbots to explain a complicated topic to you, a simple prompt such as “Explain the topic of the subject for my curriculum like I am 10” could be a life changer.
  • Finding flash cards online is sometimes difficult so students can use bots to make them accelerate memory retention.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations

There are several challenges and ethical considerations of AI in an education setting such as many students have started being excessively dependent on AI to finish their assignments which has slowed down their progress in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Moreover, Academy integrity is harmed raising concerns about plagiarism and ethical AI usage.

Furthermore, misinformation & bias a major concerns meaning they may generate misleading or incorrect information hence human verification is very important as AI Bots are still in their early phase of development.

Overall, AI is rapidly evolving and it can be used to grow, especially in a student’s learning journey.

Knowing how to use AI effectively is a skill that needs to be learnt such as using techniques of prompt engineering to gain the strategy to solve questions or understand complicated topics. Additionally, it facilitates individualised learning in the convenience of your own home. Plus using it ethically is very

important to develop skills such as Critical and Problem solving. Therefore, working with AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for learning can empower students to grow independent, and more creative and prepare them for the future.
