Tamil Nadu Rains 2021: Heavy Rains Trigger Flood-Like Situation In Dharmapuri District

These heavy rains triggered floods in the Kalasappadi river, which has cut off the mountain villages in the Dharmapuri district from the towns, located in the plain terrain

Chennai: Days after wreaking havoc in the northern parts of Tamil Nadu, the low-pressure area has moved down south in the state as Dharmapuri districts are being battered by floods. These heavy rains triggered floods in the Kalasappadi river, which has cut off the villages in the hilly region of the Dharmapuri district from the towns, located in the plain terrain.

The government turns deaf ear as the public demands to build a bridge that can connect the villages on the hilly terrain to the nearby town. The plight of the locals is unheard of, during the monsoon, they have to walk through the waist-deep water, the school children need to cross the river to attend a government school in Vachathi village.

The Dharmapuri district has 66 mountain villages in the Chitteri panchayat next to Harur. The villages on the hilly terrain, including Arasanatham, Kalasappadi, Karungalpatti, and Kalnadu are to be reached by muddy roads. According to a report in ABP Nady, to buy essentials, it is mandatory for the villagers to make a visit to the nearby town with the help of public transport. During the monsoon, rainwater cuts off the roadways and brings normal life to a grinding halt.

Various political parties have staged protests on behalf of the people but there are no development activities happening in this region. In 2006, two schoolchildren were washed away in floods during a similar flood-like situation. Therefore, the villagers have demanded that the Tamil Nadu government should build a small bridge across the river in the Nalukupparai area, for the convenience of the people of the three mountain villages.
