TN Rain: Thunderstorms With Light To Moderate Rain Predicted In Parts Of State

Thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain are expected in isolated areas across several districts in Tamil Nadu.

As rain continues to lash Tamil Nadu, the weather department in Chennai has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain in isolated areas across several districts in the state.

These include Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Vellore, and Tirupattur. Additionally, lighter rainfall is anticipated in isolated spots in Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Thiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts.

Mixed reactions from farmers

The continuous downpour has made the farmers in over 20 villages happy within Vellore's Gudiyattam taluk, as it will lead to a rise in groundwater levels. However, it also raises concerns as the recent incessant rainfall has pushed the Mordhana dam to its full capacity.

If the rainfall persists over the next 48 hours, there is a possibility of the Mordhana Dam overflowing, according to local sources. Officials are urgently appealing to the government to prioritise the repair of inflow canals to manage the water flow from the Mordhana Dam.

Farmers are also urging the district administration to redirect the excess water towards nearby lakes, which would significantly benefit their livelihoods. The Mordhana Dam, built across the Koundinya River, a tributary of the Palar, serves 19 tanks in Gudiyattam and Katpadi taluks.

The state has experienced heavy rainfall over the past week, causing widespread disruptions to daily life.

Earlier in the month, waterlogging was reported in Erode because of the continuous heavy rainfall. In low-lying areas, rainwater mixed with drain water, inundated houses. Residents demanded a permanent solution to the problem of waterlogging in the area.
