Tamil Nadu: Flooded Kanyakumari Gets Respite, CM To Visit Parts Which Are Still Under Water Today

Till Monday, the district administration evacuated around 3,200 people in the past 24 hours.

Chennai: Three days of incessant rainfall in Kanyakumari, which was found to be the heaviest rainfall recorded in the region in a decade, left many parts of the district inundated with thousands of people evacuated and shifted to nearby camps. Many parts of the district are still underwater despite getting a respite from the rains on Sunday and are likely to get on Monday. However, nearly 14 places in Kanyakumari saw rainfall of over 100mm within 24 hours and a few other places recorded rainfall of over 200 mm.

According to a report on Times of India, the rivers of the district were in spate with Thamirapani brimming with full capacity.  The three-day rainfall submerged Agastheeswaram taluk, Kalkulam, Thovalai, Vilavancode, and Killiyoor taluks in Kanyakumari.

The water flooded the Suchindram temple where the water was pumped out using motors.

On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is expected to visit the flood-affected region. Ministers including KKSSR Ramachandran, Periakaruppan and Mano Thangaraj conducted inspections in the flood-affected regions on Sunday.

Talking about his visit, MK Stalin said, “We are going to start a committee under Minister I Periyasamy to analyze the damages in the Delta region. The report will be submitted on Monday.”

“I will travel to Kanyakumari on Monday. We will compile all the damages and send the details to PM Modi urging for a compensation. We will not work only for the people who voted for us but also for people who did not vote for us,” he said.

Meanwhile, AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam and AIADMK co-coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami will visit flood-affected areas in Delta districts including Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai, as a release from the party headquarters in Chennai.
