SS Badrinath, Founder Of Sankara Nethralaya, Dies At 83

Guided by mentors Dr. SS Badrinath established Sankara Nethralaya in 1978 which became the biggest charitable non-profit ophthalmic organisation in India.

Dr. SS Badrinath, the visionary founder of Sankara Nethralaya, a renowned eye hospital, passed away on November 21 due to age-related ailments. Badrinath was 83 years old. He is a recipient of Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, and is survived by his two sons.

Born in Triplicane, Chennai, in 1940, Dr. Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath faced adversity even as a teenager, losing both parents. Despite this, he completed his medical studies using the life insurance money he received after his father's demise. Guided by mentors, he established Sankara Nethralaya in 1978 which became India's biggest charitable non-profit ophthalmic organisation, as reported by India Today. 

Several prominent leaders including PM Modi expressed their condolences. 

Taking to X, PM Modi said, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. SS Badrinath Ji, a visionary, expert in ophthalmology and founder of Sankara Nethralaya. His contributions to eye care and his relentless service to society have left an indelible mark. His work will continue to inspire generations. Condolences to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti."

Former Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu said, "Deeply grieved to learn of the sad news of the demise of Dr. SS Badrinath, the founder of Sankara Nethralaya. He was a one-man institution, a stalwart who built this iconic Hospital which caters to thousands of patients from all over. Om Shanti!"

Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan said, "Deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of renowned Doctor Shri. SS Badrinath Ji, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya, one of our Country's renowned eye hospitals. He dedicated his life in serving the society, especially in the field of eye medical care. My deepest condolences to his family and well wishers. Om Shanti."
