Schools, Colleges To Remain Closed In Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur District Due To Heavy Rainfall

The unseasonal rain was reported due to the presence of a low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar and Srilanka.

Chennai: In the wake of heavy rains, Thanjavur District Collector Dinesh Ponraj announced a rain holiday for schools and colleges in the district on Saturday.

According to ANI, Thanjavur District Collector said, “In the wake of heavy rains in Thanjavur district, schools and colleges in the district will remain closed on Saturday.”

The unseasonal rain was reported due to the presence of a low-pressure area over Gulf of Mannar and Srilanka. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, “Yesterday’s (February 2) Depression over south Srilanka moved southwestwards and weakened into a well marked low pressure area over Comorin and adjoining Gulf of Mannar and west coast of Srilanka at 2300 hrs IST of 2nd February 2023 and persisted over the same region at 0830 hrs IST of 3rd February 2023 with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels.”

“It is very likely to move southwestwards and weaken gradually into a low-pressure area during the next 12 hours,” the IMD said.

As a result of the weather changes, IMD predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms over parts of Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas on Saturday. The IMD said, “Light/moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas.”

In Chennai, IMD said, “Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. The maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 30-31 °C and 24 - 25 °C respectively.”
