According to Forest Department officials, at least six people, including four Fire and Rescue Services personnel, were injured in the attack, as reported by the news agency PTI. The fire service personnel sustained injuries in a bid to rescue a woman in whose house the big cat took refuge while straying into a human habitat in this hilly town, the officials further stated.
The woman was also attacked by the leopard, and all the injured are being treated at a local hospital after they were rescued by nearby residents.
A driver of the local tahsildar was also attacked by the leopard later. One of the injured firemen has been shifted to Coimbatore for treatment. Efforts are on to trap the animal, and two cages have been placed outside the house, the officials added.
In another incident, a six-year-old boy was mauled to death by a leopard in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur. The incident occurred in Lal Nagar Sipahiya village of Suhelwa forest area in the district, a forest department official said on Sunday. The Balrampur District Magistrate had directed the forest department to catch the leopard.
According to forest officials, the boy, identified as Arun, had gone to a field behind his house when a leopard caught him in its jaws and fled. Hearing him screaming for help, villagers tried to chase down the animal, but it disappeared in the sugarcane field, forest officials said. A few hours later, the villagers discovered Arun's body in the field. His left hand was dismembered.
