'Just An Eyewash..': BJP On Tamil Nadu Govt Order For 4% DA Hike To Employees & Pensioners

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin directed that the DA be increased from 42 to 46 percent beginning July 1 this year.

Tamil Nadu Government announced a 4 per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for State government employees, teachers and pensioners with a retrospective effect from July 1 this year on Wednesday. The Chief Minister directed that the DA be increased from 42 to 46 percent beginning July 1 this year. Following this, BJP termed the move as "an eyewash".

Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathy said, "This government has not done anything for the government employees... This is just an eyewash... Though this government has promised that they will fulfill all their promises. They have not fulfilled any of their promises."

According to an official announcement, the decision will benefit around 16 lakh state government employees, teachers, retirees, and family pensioners, with an additional annual expenditure of Rs 2546.16 crore.

In May, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin announced a 4 per cent Dearness Allowance Hike provided to state government employees. As a result, DA hiked from 38 per cent to 42 per cent. An official release said that CM approved 4 per cent hike of DA taking effect at the commencement of the new financial year on April 1.

Earlier, the state said that sitting at 42 per cent DA would entail an additional expenditure of Rs 2,366.82 crore. However, the move was also aimed to benefit 16 lakh government employees.

Previously, the state government stated that it would implement a DA raise in tandem with any increase made by the Central government. Just last week, the Union Cabinet declared an identical 4 percent escalation in DA and DR for central government employees and pensioners, correspondingly.
