'Forcible' Vasectomy: 4 Men Brought 47-Yr-Old To PHC So They Could Get A 'Commission', Complaint Says

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for permanent contraception among men.

Chennai: A 47-year-old firewood cutter from Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district filed a complaint with Soorangudi police station alleging that four men and doctors of Government Primary Health Centre at Sayalkudi in Ramanathapuram forcefully made him undergo vasectomy. Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for permanent contraception among men.

Muthuserman of Sinthamani Nagar on Monday gave a complaint to police against four persons identified as Soorvalli, Muniasamy, Kasilingam and Selvaraj, reports IANS. In the complaint, Muthuserman said that the four men came to him on the pretext of seeking help with some woodwork. However, on February 25, they took him to Sayalkudi PHC in Ramanathapuram district and forced him to undergo vasectomy.

After the procedure, he said that he was handed over Rs 1,100. Yet, he said that he suffers from fatigue and discomfort.

However, the PHC doctor said, the procedure was performed with the permission of Muthuserman and the no-scalpel vasectomy method was followed. The husband and wife came to the clinic again and they were given counseling, the doctor said.

Further, the doctor said that they were not forcefully targeting people to conduct vasectomy procedures. However, he agreed that Rs 150 was provided to the workers for bringing people to perform vasectomy.

On the other hand, many people visit Sayilkudi PHC since it has been awarded as the best performing PHC in the state. Yet some people lure alcoholics and illiterates into performing the procedure for money, said the report.

Talking to IANS, Soorangudi Police Station house officer said that the probe is on.
