Diwali 2021: Chennai Corporation Collects 40 Tonnes Of More Waste Than Last Year, Highest In 5 Years

All the waste has been sent to SIPCOT in Gummidipoondi through 33 vehicles of Tamil Nadu Waste Management for review and recycling

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation collected firecracker waste totaling 138.21 metric tonnes by 12 pm on Friday. The waste generated by the city dwellers was 40 tonnes more than last year.

In a release by Chennai Corporation, the civic body said the sanitation workers collected 138.21 metric tonnes of firecracker waste till 12 pm on Friday.

All the waste has been sent to SIPCOT in Gummidipoondi through 33 vehicles of Tamil Nadu Waste Management for review and recycling.

According to a report on Times of India, more waste was collected from the zones including Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Teynampet and Anna Nagar which generated 55 tonnes of waste on Diwali day. However, most wastes on November 5 was collected from the Adyar zone which alone generated 15.3 tonnes of waste.

All the more, Chennai recorded the highest amount of waste in the past five years. The city Corporation in 2017 generated 85 tonnes of cracker waste, while it generated 95 tonnes in 2018, 103 tonnes in 2019 and 98 tonnes in 2020.

Despite the order put in place by the Tamil Nadu government to burst crackers between 6 am to 7 am and 7 pm to 8 pm, the police registered cases against 758 people for violating the state government and the Supreme Court order. The Supreme Court ordered to burst green crackers and to avoid crackers that create noise and air pollution.

The police also booked the violators under sections of the Indian Penal Code including negligent conduct with respect to explosive substances. They also collected fines from violators. 

The police registered 769 cases on Diwali day alone.
