Pregnant Dalit Woman & Husband Beaten Up For Stealing Dog In Tamil Nadu

The police arrested two "dominant caste" men based on the complaint of the couple.

Chennai: Two men were arrested by the police for beating a pregnant Dalit woman and her husband for reportedly stealing hound dogs from their farms in Kadavur taluk in Karur, on Thursday.

These men reportedly came from the purported "dominant caste".

The issue came to light after the Dalit woman who suffered injuries in the attack was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital in Karur. During the treatment, she revealed to the doctors about the attack and later gave a police complaint.

According to a report on Times of India, two men identified as M Kumarasan and K Murugesan were arrested by the police based on the complaint of the couple under sections of IPC and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act).

The couple E Tamil Selvi and her husband K Ettidurai are from Arundhathiyar community. Last month when Ettidurai picked Selvi who is a sanitary worker from Poosaripatti middle school, Kumaresan and Murugesan stopped them and started assaulting Ettidurai.

When Selvi tried to stop the duo, they started alleging that the couple robbed hounds that were on the farm and sold it outside. However, when Selvi still used force to stop the assault, she alleged that the duo kicked her in her pregnant belly and a few others also joined to attack Ettidurai.

After getting a stomach ache due to the attack, Tamil Selvi was taken to the hospital where police took a verbal complaint.

Talking to TOI about the investigation, DSP Sridhar said Ettidurai stole some 'Chippiparai' dogs and angered by it the accused assaulted him. However, it's against the law to assault people and they should have directly informed the police, he added.
