COVID-19: Tamil Nadu Records Massive Spike With 2,731 New Cases, Chennai's Tally Nears 1500-Mark

The state recorded nearly a hike of 1,000 cases as against the 1,728 cases reported on Monday. 

Chennai: In a massive spike of coronavirus cases, Tamil Nadu crossed 2,500-mark and recorded a whopping 2,731 cases on Tuesday. The highest number of 1,489 cases of the state tally was reported from Tamil Nadu’s capital city, Chennai. 

The state recorded nearly a hike of 1,000 cases as against the 1,728 cases reported on Monday. 

In a media bulletin on Tuesday, the health department said, the state currently has 12,412 active cases in the state. Till now, 27,55,587 persons have tested positive for the virus from the time of the coronavirus outbreak. 

The bulletin said, after Chennai, the highest number of novel coronavirus cases was reported in Chengalpattu (290) followed by Tiruvallur (147) and Coimbatore (120).

All the more, the Tamil Nadu government continues to test samples of over 1 lakh persons every day. The state on Tuesday reported 1,03,573 persons for the virus.

On Tuesday, the state also reported 9 deaths of all patients with comorbidities. 

However, the state maintained Omicron cases at 121 of which 105 persons were discharged from the hospital after treatment. 

On the other hand, as the number of cases is increasing in the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday held a review meeting with health department officials to check the preparedness measures and to discuss the need for imposing lockdown measures. 

Based on the discussion, a report on Times of India said, the officials are mulling to bring back night curfew and online classes may resume for students. The increasing caseload especially in Chennai has also increased the concern of the public on the availability of beds to treat the patients.
