Chennai: MTC Bus Knocks Down Girl Who Was Returning Home After I-Day Event

The MTC bus knocked the girl from behind and before she could recover from the fall, the MTC bus ran over her.

Chennai: A Class 12 student who was returning home after the Independence Day event at her school was run over by an MTC bus on Rajendra Prasad Road in Chromepet on Monday. 

According to a report on Times of India, the deceased girl P Lakshmi Sree of Nemilicherry was a student of a private school in Chrompet. The student on Monday attended her school and was on her way home driving a bicycle. Her friend also accompanied her on another bicycle. 

While they took the route via RP Road, an MTC bus (route 52H) on its way to Pozhichalur hit the girl from behind. She immediately fell on the road and before recovering from the fall, the MTC bus ran over her. She died on the spot. 

The police sent the body of the girl to Chrompet GH for an autopsy.

Following this, the Chrompet traffic police nabbed the driver of the bus Devakumar who tried to flee from the place. The cop also recovered the CCTV footage from the spot which showed the MTC bus driver driving behind the girl without any indication and knocking her down. 

Based on the CCTV footage, a case was also booked under charges of causing death due to negligence.

Residents Demand To Remove Encroachment On Road

On Monday, activists gathered at the accident spot and demanded the government to remove the encroachment on the road. They said the shops and other establishments on the road are posing a danger to the pedestrians.

Meanwhile, a traffic police officer told The Hindu that a study would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the accident and they would coordinate with the respective departments to remove encroachments.
