Chennai Corporation Pulls Up School For Segregating Students On Caste Basis

In an image of the attendance register instead of the alphabetical order, the first page of the record showed all the students from BC, the next page showed students from MBC and SC Communities.

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday pulled up a primary school in the city for segregating its students into three batches for attending classes based on their caste and community. The headmistress of the school said that there was no intention to segregate the students based on caste and they just segregated the students as per the attendance order but GCC immediately told the school to stop that practice.

In an image of the attendance register, the first page of the record showed all the students from Backward Community, the next page showed students from Most Backward Community and Scheduled Caste Community instead of the alphabetical order of the attendance system.

According to a report on ABP Nadu, a primary school segregates its students into three groups based on their caste group and community. Talking about the incident, the headmistress of the school said, this has been the pattern followed by the school for a long time and the segregation was not on the basis of caste. The students from the same caste came under one batch unintentionally, she added.

The headmistress also said that the students will not know about this method since it is only for administrative purposes.

Based on the information, D Sneha, Deputy Commissioner (Education) GCC said, the attendance register should only be maintained based on the alphabetical practice and we will make sure that the system is followed everywhere.

However, many activists warned that segregating students based on their caste will lead to repercussions in the future.
