On Tuesday (July 19), Palaniswami announced that former AIADMK Minister RB Udhayakumar has been unanimously elected as deputy leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the post which was previously held by ousted AIADMK leader Panneerselvam.

Amid unrest between Panneerselvam and Palaniswami's factions, AIADMK General Council on July 11 appointed the latter as the party's interim General Secretary. In the crucial party meet, it was also announced that the general secretary election will be held in four months.

In the General Council meeting, OPS has been expelled from all party posts, which triggered furore among his loyalists. Leaders from OPS camp broke into the AIADMK headquarters and started to violently protest against the decisions made in the meeting. After which the revenue officials ended up sealing the party head office.
