Video: Aligarh Muslim University Students' Celebrate Holi Amid Permission Row

Following initial denial, AMU granted permission for Holi celebrations at NRS Club. Provost Prof. B.B. Singh allowed participation of all AMU students on March 13, 14.

Following a major row over the Holi celebrations at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), permission was granted for a Holi Milan program at the NRS Club. The provost of the hall, Prof. B.B. Singh, stated that on March 13 and 14, any AMU student could come to the hall and play Holi. Subsequently, students at AMU celebrated Holi with enthusiasm, and videos surfaced showing students applying colours and celebrating the festival together.

In a video posted on X, several students can be seen playing Holi in the Aligarh Muslim University campus at the non-resident students' club (NRSC).

Aligarh SP Mrigank Shekhar Pathak said that the PSU and RAF have been deployed amid the Holi celebrations being held at the NRC club in AMU.

"Holi celebrations are being held at the NRC club in AMU this time. In view of this, forces - PSU and RAF - have been deployed in here. Besides, local forces are also present here. Forces will stay until the event concludes," said Aligarh SP Mrigank Shekhar Pathak.

DSP Abhay Kumar Pandey said that there was a provision to play Holi inside campus, but some students said that they should be given separate arrangements.

“In this regard, they have been allotted to play Holi at the NRSC club...Keeping this in mind, police force has been deployed here...After checking, only the bona fide students of AMU will be allowed to enter this campus …,” DSP Abhay Kumar said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Hindu student Akhil Kaushal, studying at AMU, had requested permission from the AMU administration on March 9 for the Holi Milan celebration, but initially, the administration denied the request. Later, permission was granted for Hindu students to celebrate Holi at the NRS Club on March 13 and 14, specifying that they could play Holi from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Prior to this, BJP MP from Aligarh, Satish Gautam, had commented on the controversy over celebrating Holi at AMU, saying that opposition to Holi reflects the mentality of those influenced by Jinnah.

BJP MP Satish Gautam also mentioned that AMU has nearly 40,000 students, of whom 4,000 are Hindu. Hindu students request permission to celebrate Holi every year because their numbers are fewer, and they want to ensure that the festival is celebrated peacefully. They fear that if permission is denied, students from other religious groups may create disturbances, as has been seen in the past.
