New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday fixed August 28 as the date for demolition of Supertech's twin 40-storey towers in Noida after its technical expert gave approval for the rigging of the towers with explosives.

According to news agency PTI, a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna granted a "bandwidth" of one week, starting from August 29 to September 4, to the agencies engaged in the demolishing exercise on grounds that there may be some marginal delay in razing the huge buildings due to technical reasons and weather conditions.

The apex court also asked agencies concerned, including the management of Supertech, to cooperate with the agencies involved in the demolition exercise.

CBRI's Nod For Rigging Of Explosives Inside Twin Towers

The nod of the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) was the last approval needed for the charging -- rigging of explosives inside the structures -- of the twin towers located in Sector 93B in Noida, news agency PTI reported officials as saying.

The nearly 100-metre tall illegal structures, which were so far scheduled for demolition at 2.30 pm on August 21, were proposed to be demolished on August 28 by the CBRI, a senior Noida Authority official told PTI on Thursday.

The recommendation came in view of the reports of all stakeholders, including the Noida Authority, CBRI, developer Supertech, demolition firm Edifice Engineering and it's South African partner Jet Demolition, on safety measures for the job.

"The CBRI has given its approval to demolition firm Edifice Engineering to proceed with the charging process," another Noida Authority official said, as quoted by PTI.

"The CBRI was satisfied with the responses related to safety measures after Edifice and Supertech agreed to have the structural audit of nearby buildings done before demolition of the twin towers," he added.

As per the official, Supertech and Edifice have assured the CBRI of putting all safety and risk mitigation measures in place in the Emerald Court and ATS Village societies, adjoining the twin towers.

Over 3,500 kg of explosives will be filled in around 9,400 holes drilled in the columns and shears of the skeletal structures of the twin towers, PTI reported citing officials.

The Supreme Court on August 30, 2021, ordered the demolition of the nearly 100-metre tall twin towers which had come up in violation of building bye-laws inside Supertech's Emerald Court group housing society in sector 93A.

Supertech's Apex and Ceyane towers in Noida Sector 93A are scheduled for demolition in pursuance of the SC order. It was previously reported that a Rs 100 crore insurance cover was taken to compensate for any damage caused by the demolition. The two buildings together have 915 apartments and 21 shops.
