15-Year-Old Minor, Who Ran Over 2 People Last Year, Hits Four More In Kanpur

Kanpur City Commissioner Akhil Kumar denounced the teenager's family for allowing him to drive once more, especially after his involvement in a deadly accident just months prior.

A 15-year-old boy, whose rash driving allegedly killed two persons last October, has been apprehended after he was involved in another accident in Kanpur's Barra area.

The minor has been sent to a juvenile home on Wednesday after injuring four people.

Kanpur City Commissioner Akhil Kumar denounced the teenager's family for allowing him to drive once more, especially after his involvement in a deadly accident just months prior, as per a report of Hindustan Times.

Kumar emphasised the need for strict measures to tackle the issue of underage driving, urging both individuals and families to act responsibly.

Police said, the teenager was driving a car on Tuesday, when he collided with four people, resulting in injuries to them. The injured individuals received immediate first-aid treatment. The Kanpur boy has been charged under IPC sections 279 and 338 for reckless driving.

Notably, the boy's father, a well-known doctor in the city, has been implicated in both accidents. Last October, his son's rash driving led to the deaths of Sagar Nishad and Ashish Ram Charan when their vehicle crashed into them on the Ganga Barrage.

Harish Chandra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), revealed that the teenager had previously been charged under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, with causing death by negligence. However, this has now been replaced with Section 304, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Campaign To Be Launched To Raise Awareness

Chandra emphasised the necessity of a proactive approach to address the issue of underage driving. As part of this effort, a campaign will be launched in schools to raise awareness and educate young individuals about the dangers associated with underage driving. Chandra added that a drive would be taken up in schools to sensitise youngsters not to indulge in underage driving.

Wednesday's action follows a wave of national outrage triggered by the incident involving the son of a real estate developer. He allegedly caused the deaths of two individuals while driving a luxury sports car under the influence of alcohol. The real estate developer has since been arrested and is currently in police custody until May 24, as per the decision of a sessions court.

Police have also approached the juvenile board to seek a review of the decision to release him on bail.
