Cinema Meets Politics: Rajinikanth-Durai Murugan Patch Up After Spat Over 'Seniority' Remark

Earlier, Rajinikanth's comparison of senior politicians to unruly students sparked a brief feud with DMK's Durai Murugan.

After months of debate over remarks relating to seniority in politics and cinema, superstar Rajinikanth and DMK veteran Durai Murugan have come to a friendly conclusion. The episode began in August 2024 at a school event where Rajinikanth made a witty comparison between managing senior students and dealing with seasoned politicians.

Rajinikanth-Durai Murugan Spate

Stating that it was very hard for teachers to handle old students in school, he said that so was the scenario for senior ministers.

The comment sparked reactions across the political spectrum, drawing both amusement and criticism.

Durai Murugan, responding indirectly, countered with his own metaphor, saying that even in cinema senior actors would perform even without hair or teeth leaving no space for youngsters. While he did not name anyone, the context was unmistakable.

Spate Ends In Friendship

In a recent book launch event, recognizing the controversy, Rajinikanth clarified that his words were not meant as disrespect. “Old students are the foundation of any movement—their wisdom is its strength,” he said in a follow-up statement.

However, any tension between the two was put to rest after a personal phone call from Rajinikanth to Durai Murugan. On July 15, the DMK leader confirmed the reconciliation and even joked about the conversation: “I told Rajini to keep in touch with me regularly from now on.”
