Odisha Youth Dies By Suicide Over 'Failure To Pay Off Loans Taken To Indulge Online Gaming Addiction'

An Odisha man allegedly died by suicide on Sunday because he had accumulated lakhs in debt to cater to his addiction to a mobile game, and was unable to pay it off. The incident occurred on Sunday night in Kadubani village under the jurisdiction of the Kaliapani police station in Jajpur, Odisha, PTI reported.
The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Srinivasa Nayak alias Lincon. He was the only son of Brajabandhu Nayak.
On Sunday night, Lincon had dinner with his family before he went to his bedroom. In the morning, when he did not come outside, his family members knocked on his door. Upon receiving no response from him, the family decided to break open the door of his room and they found his body hanging from the ceiling.
Lincon was employed as a contract worker in a private mining company, and had allegedly suffered losses amounting to several lakhs due to his addiction to the online game ‘Daman’, which he played on his mobile phone, local news portals reported. He consequently took out loans, and was allegedly facing relentless pressure from moneylenders to repay the debt.
According to PTI, the police have sent Lincon’s body for post-mortem examination. They have registered an unnatural death case, and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide.
A senior police official told the news agency that they are also examining his bank records, which may provide additional insights into the reason behind his decision.
Rajasthan Suicide 'Due To Online Gaming Debt'
In a similar incident, in July, a 22-year-old allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district after he lost money in an online betting game, IANS reported.
The deceased was identified as Shivraj Raigar, who worked at an e-mitra shop and was addicted to betting games. After he lost money, he also withdrew Rs 70,000 from his parents' account but eventually lost that too.
The incident occurred when his father went to Jodhpur for some work and the rest of the family members were on the farm. When Shivraj's wife came home from the field, she discovered his body hanging in the room.
