Landslides, Floods Snap Road Links In Arunachal. Itanagar Battles Water Crisis

The roads affected include NH-415, connecting Itanagar with Banderdewa. It has been closed by the authorities for commuters’ safety after a massive landslide occurred at the Karsingsa block point.

Persistent rain has disrupted road links to several districts in Arunachal Pradesh. According to PTI, floods and landslides have caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, culverts, power lines, electric poles, transformers and water supply systems in the northeastern state.

Landslides buried a person in the Shi-Yomi district on Friday. Ffour people have died in the state since April due to natural calamities.

A state disaster management department report stated that 76 power lines, 30 electric poles, and three transformers have been damaged so far. Damage has also been reported to 160 roads, nine bridges, 11 culverts, and 147 water supply systems.

Besides this, rain has damaged 627 kutcha and 51 pucca houses and 155 huts.

Itanagar has been facing a severe water crisis for the past few days owing to damaged pipelines. While the restoration process is on, it will reportedly still take a few more days.

The NH-415, connecting Itanagar with Banderdewa, has been closed by the authorities for commuters’ safety after a massive landslide occurred at the Karsingsa block point. After an inspection by Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta, the road was closed, and all traffic diverted via Gumto. Meanwhile, the NH 513 was blocked at Geying in East Siang district.

Other roads blocked include the Tezu-Hayuliand road, at Mompani area in Lohit and Anjaw districts. Landslides have also blocked the Dari-Chamband and the Palin-Taraklengdi via Langdang village PMGSY road in Kra Daadi district.

Around 72,900 people and 257 villages have been affected by floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh since April.

In Namsai and Changlang districts, Assam Rifles has launched ‘Operation Saviour’ to rescue stranded civilians and provide relief to flood-devastated villagers, according to IANS. About 500 civilians were rescued by security personnel from far-flung villages in Dharampur, Mudoi, Shrishtipur, Vijoypur, Hanthi Mara Beel, and Chowkham.

AP reported that Damin, Parsi Parlo and Panyasang administrative circles under Kurung Kumey district are cut off from the rest of the state, after a massive flashflood and landslide triggered by rain.
