When Wrestler-Turned-Politician Mulayam Singh Yadav Picked Up Inspector And Slammed Him On Stage

The incident took place in the year 1960 when Mulayam used to do wrestling in those days.

New Delhi: Mulayam Singh Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the founder-patron of the Samajwadi Party (SP) passed away this morning at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital due to multiple organ failure. There are many famous stories related to Mulayam in his home state Uttar Pradesh. One of these anecdotes is such, in which it is said that he picked up a police inspector on the stage and slammed him. It is said that the police inspector was not allowing a poet to read his poetry on the stage.

The incident took place in the year 1960 when Mulayam used to wrestle in those days. On 26 June 1960, a 'Kavi Sammelan' was going on on the campus of Jain Inter College of Karhal, Mainpuri. Famous poet Damodar Swaroop 'Rebel' was also present at the function.

As soon as the poet started reciting his poem 'Delhi Ki Gaddi Savdhaan', an inspector of UP Police reached the stage and stopped him from reading the poem. The policeman almost scolded the poet and said that he cannot read such poetry against the government.

While the debate was going on on the stage, Mulayam reached the stage running fast from the audience gallery and in anger picked up the inspector and slammed him.

After years of this incident, when Mulayam became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, he honored the poet Damodar Swaroop 'Rebel' with the 'Sahitya Bhushan Samman' of Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan.

Mulayam in his early days was ambitious to become a wrestler. But before a politician, he was also a good wrestler. His name was known as the most famous wrestler in the country.

Born on November 22, 1939, in Saifai, Etawah, Mulayam's father was a wrestler and wanted to make Mulayam a wrestler too.

However, Mulayam made his way into politics through wrestling itself. His political guru Nathu Singh was very impressed with Mulayam during a wrestling competition organized in Mainpuri and then Mulayam Singh Yadav's political career started from there.

The mortal remains of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder of the Samajwadi Party (SP), arrived at his native Saifai village on Monday, hours after the leader died at a Gurugram hospital. Former Uttar Pradesh CM died Monday in Medanta hospital in Gurugram, where he was undergoing treatment. Mulayam, 82, was admitted to the hospital in August, was shifted to ICU on October 2 and was on lifesaving drugs since. According to hospital sources, he breathed his last at 8.15 a.m. on Monday.
