WhatsApp appears to be working on a significant upgrade to its payment system by integrating UPI Lite, a feature designed for seamless small transactions. According to a report from Android Authority, the messaging giant is currently testing this functionality, potentially enhancing its digital payment capabilities and placing it in direct competition with platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

Beta Version Reveals UPI Lite Integration
A recent teardown of WhatsApp's beta version (v2.25.5.17) has revealed references to UPI Lite in its code. This suggests that the feature is under active development, although it remains unclear when it will be officially rolled out. Notably, the findings indicate that UPI Lite transactions will only be supported on a user’s primary device, with no functionality on linked devices.
What Is UPI Lite & How Does It Work?
For those unfamiliar with UPI Lite, it is a streamlined version of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) designed for low-value transactions. Unlike regular UPI payments, which require real-time authentication and direct bank involvement, UPI Lite allows users to load a small sum into a digital wallet. This balance can then be used for quick payments without needing repeated authorisation.
The primary advantage is a faster, more reliable transaction experience, particularly useful for everyday expenses like street vendor purchases or public transport fares. Moreover, WhatsApp’s UPI Lite implementation is expected to support pin-free transactions, aligning with how the system works on other platforms.
WhatsApp’s Competitive Edge In Digital Payments
Although WhatsApp already supports UPI-based transactions in India, the introduction of UPI Lite could make digital payments even more accessible for its massive Indian user base, which exceeds 500 million. Currently, WhatsApp is not listed as an official UPI Lite partner, unlike Google Pay, PhonePe, and Samsung Wallet, but this development suggests that could soon change.
Beyond UPI Lite, WhatsApp is reportedly working on additional payment features, including bill payments for utilities and mobile recharges. If implemented, this would further position WhatsApp as a comprehensive payment hub within the messaging app.
As of now, there is no official confirmation on when these features will be available to all users.
