Kerala Man Returns Home After Being Forced To Join Russian Army In Job Fraud

Jain Kurian, a 27-year-old from Wadakkanchery in Kerala, has returned to India after being forcibly recruited into the Russian army under the guise of a fraudulent overseas job offer. Jain, who sustained bullet injuries in the Russia-Ukraine war zone, shared his harrowing experience with the media on Thursday, expressing disbelief that he had survived.
Jain Returns To India
Speaking at his home, Jain recounted how he was promised a job in Russia but was instead pushed into a military role upon arrival. He added that his return was made possible by the intervention of the Malayali association in Russia, as per a report on Manorama. The group arranged for his return flight, allowing him to head directly to the airport from the hospital where he was recovering, rather than reporting back to the military camp as ordered.
Jain had been serving in a non-combat role, delivering food to soldiers across various locations. However, on January 7, he was seriously injured in a drone strike and has been recovering in a Russian hospital since then, reported The Hindu. Though his military contract expired in April, Jain had recently expressed fears of being forced back into active combat—a concern that prompted urgent appeals from his family to bring him home.
Local MLA Davis Chittilappilly visited Jain at his residence to offer support and commend the efforts of those who helped secure his safe return.
However, Jain’s story is not an isolated case. His relative, Binil Babu, a 32-year-old from Thrissur, was killed in the Russia-Ukraine war zone on January 4. Despite repeated pleas from the family, his mortal remains have not yet been repatriated.
