Kerala: Central Water Commission Issues ‘Orange’ & ‘Yellow’ Flood Alerts Amid Rising River Levels

The Central Water Commission alerts come in the wake of devastating landslides that have already claimed over 150 lives in Wayanad.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued orange and yellow alerts due to the alarming rise in river water levels across several districts in Kerala on Wednesday. The alerts come in the wake of devastating landslides that have already claimed numerous lives in the region.

The CWC has announced an orange alert for the following rivers: Thodupuzha (Manakad station) in Idukki district, Karuvannur (Palakkadav station) in Thrissur district, Gayathri (Kondazhi station) in Palakkad district, Keecheri (Kottapuram station) in Palakkad district, Bharathapuzha (Kumpiti station) in Palakkad district, Kandyapuzha (Pudur station) in Palakkad district, Pulamthod (Pulamanthol station) in Palakkad district and Kadalundi (Karathot station) in Malappuram district. 

The CWC has issued a yellow alert for the following rivers: Manimala (Kalluppara station) in Pathanamthitta district, Chalakudy (Arangali station) in Thrissur district, Kuttiyadi (Kutiyadi station) in Kozhikode district, Chandragiri (Pookayam station) in Kasaragod district and Payaswini (Erinhipuzha station) in Kasaragod district. 

Residents living near these rivers are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

Wayanad Landslide 

In a related development, the northern Kerala district of Wayanad has been severely impacted by massive landslides. Official sources reported on Wednesday that approximately 132 people have died, and over 200 have been injured due to the landslides. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue to unearth debris.

The landslides, which struck the Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas, have left over 180 people missing and completely destroyed more than 300 houses. Rescue teams, including personnel from the Army, Navy, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are tirelessly working to locate survivors and clear the debris.
