Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has reportedly declined an invitation to join the Congress' 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' as it enters Bihar on January 30, according to media reports citing sources on Thursday afternoon. The invitation, extended via Congress legislature party leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan, was met with non-committal responses from Nitish Kumar, who is already displeased with delays in seat-sharing talks for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
This refusal comes three days after the Congress' Bihar unit claimed that the Chief Minister had agreed to participate in a rally in Purnia district. Senior Bihar Congress leader Chandra Mishra stated, "In the event of his getting caught elsewhere, he assured (us) a senior leader will be sent to represent his party," as reported by NDTV.
Former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, an ally of Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) through the Rashtriya Janata Dal, also received an invitation. However, it remains uncertain if the RJD will be present amid rumors of strained relations between the two parties over speculation that Nitish Kumar may return to the BJP.
Nitish Kumar, who was allied with the BJP in the 2020 Assembly election, later parted ways with the saffron party, causing tensions within the I.N.D.I.A bloc, formed to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
The chief minister's acknowledgment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to confer Bharat Ratna on his political mentor Karpoori Thakur was expressed earlier this week. Kumar thanked the Prime Minister for the announcement on the eve of Thakur's 100th birth anniversary, stating that it would send a positive message among deprived sections, including Dalits and backward classes.
Despite being seen as instrumental in making the I.N.D.I.A bloc possible, Nitish Kumar has faced discontent over seat-sharing talks, perceived lack of clarity in poll-prep work, and not being considered as a potential I.N.D.I.A Prime Minister candidate.
Kumar, the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar since 2005 (except for a brief period in 2014-15), severed ties with the BJP less than two years ago.
This development comes shortly after Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced her party's decision to contest all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state independently, casting uncertainty over her I.N.D.I.A membership. Banerjee, like Nitish Kumar, criticised the Congress for delays in seat-sharing talks and has offered only two seats to the Congress, citing the party's poor performance in previous general elections.
As the I.N.D.I.A bloc faces challenges and potential fractures, Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and KC Venugopal, have expressed optimism about a united front in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Bengal, downplaying the differences with Mamata Banerjee.
