4-Year Old Among Nine Killed In A Wall Collapse In Hyderabad As Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the Bachupally area, with authorities recovering the bodies of the deceased early Wednesday from beneath the debris, employing heavy machinery.

New Delhi: Rain wreaked havoc in Hyderabad as many as nine persons, including a four-year old child, were killed in two rain-related incidents in the Telangana capital, police said. According to police reports, seven people, including the child, lost their lives when a retaining wall collapsed at an under-construction apartment in the Bachupally area on Wednesday.

According to Bachupally police, the deceased were migrant workers hailing from Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the Bachupally area, with authorities recovering the bodies of the deceased early Wednesday from beneath the debris, employing heavy machinery like excavators for the task, reported PTI.

In another incident,  the Begumpet police in Hyderabad retrieved the bodies of two men, aged between 35 and 40, from a drain in SR Nagar. Identified as natives of Odisha, the deceased were suspected to have fallen into the drain, as stated by C. Ramaiah, the Begumpet police inspector.

He said the bodies were shifted to a government hospital for autopsy. The incident coincided with heavy rainfall that inundated Hyderabad and various parts of Telangana on Tuesday, disrupting normal life and exacerbating challenges in affected areas. Widespread waterlogging compounded by the downpour resulted in significant traffic congestion across several parts of the city.

Disaster Relief Force Deployed 

Amidst the devastation caused by heavy rainfall, Disaster Relief Force (DRF) teams were swiftly deployed to address the aftermath in Hyderabad. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials reported that DRF teams were actively engaged in clearing water stagnation and removing fallen trees from various locations across the city.

Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Danakishore, accompanied by GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose, personally inspected waterlogging hotspots and provided instructions to the DRF teams on the ground.
